As more and more finishing touches are applied to the National Geographic Explorer various design elements are quickly coming together. One stylistic thread is the use of glass tiles in various public areas. Beautiful shimmering glass tiles infused with copper and sea foam green are used in the backsplash of the Buffet at the Restaurant blending the colors found in that space. Rich copper and brown blended tiles are used behind the Bistro Bar in tune with the color scheme of the walls and furniture. A blend of sand, white, and earthy tiles are used extensively throughout the relaxation area by the Sauna on the Wellness Deck. The highlight, however, is the Bisazza tile mosaic of a photo of two dolphins taken by Photo Expedition Leader Ralph Hopkins on the bar of the Lounge.
Another common stylistic feature onboard is the use of brushed nickel and stainless steel. The guest corridor banisters, cabin door frames, letter boxes, floor trim, and orientation signage all feature this clean yet simple look. The Chart Room deviates from the glass tile with a brushed nickel tile that ties in wonderfully to the rich dark wood tones in that space.
As these detailed design pieces come into place on the shipboard service side of the operation, final inspections from our classification society Det Norske Veritas are vigorously underway examining everything from fire insulation to watertight doors.
