Recently Sven Lindblad attended a two-day workshop in Mexico City which brought together the key NGOs and principle funders working in Baja California. They are an impassioned, talented and committed group who are extremely concerned about the environmental and community pressures that have emerged because of rampant and often poorly planned tourism and condominium development. To help better plot sustainable tourism, we have just created a geotourism map, together with National Geographic and the Mexican Fund for the Conservation of Nature. It’s an incredible document involving hundreds of people at a cost of about $150,000 to produce. Its intent is to make visitors, local inhabitants and policy makers realize in a powerful way the importance of the natural and cultural assets of the region. We will earmark $250 in each guest’s name to support this campaign. All monies we raise will be matched by the Mexican Fund for the Conservation of Nature and matched again by a U.S. foundation. So, simply by traveling on our selected departures, you will in essence have contributed $750 towards this vital project.
