MarViva & the Marine Environment

The island of Coiba in Panama, home to many endemic species, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. It harbors tree species that have long disappeared from the mainland due to deforestation and overharvesting. The waters adjacent to the island are teeming with marine life, and the island itself is surrounded by one of the largest coral reefs along the Pacific Coasts of the Americas.

There are no permanent residents on Coiba and electricity is needed to properly maintain communications with patrol boats and between scientific stations to protect the islands from unauthorized visitors and fishermen. The project is to construct six solar panels, which would provide all the energy needed in different sites. The cost is approximately $8,000 and the donation in your name will help with its construction.
