The Making of the National Geographic Explorer

Explorer Week 16

Interior Work Continues

< PREVIOUS                                          NEXT >

Work this past week at Las Palmas has centered on steel and aluminum, creating the foundation and framing for the interior outfitting to come. This includes the installation of interior pillars, cutting away of the side shell for balconies, and cutting out for cabin and lounge windows.

Elsewhere, finalizing the design of various features of National Geographic Explorer continues. Captain Leif Skog has been putting the finishing touches on the Zodiac embarkation/mud room area. Senior Media Producer Bill Kinzie, IT Director Jason Grant, and Director of Technical Operations Brock Bullard are collaborating on the design and installation of audio-visual features for the lounge. Drawings for the extra ice-strengthening of the hull are nearing completion.

The first of countless containers that will include everything from carpets to the kayak platform are beginning to ship out, and charts for all the areas the ship will be exploring in her first year of operation are being received and catalogued on board.

A busy week on many fronts!
