The Making of the National Geographic Explorer

Explorer Week 17

Cabin Design Elements

< PREVIOUS                                            NEXT >

This week the construction of the National Geographic Explorer cabin furniture has begun. Of the 81 cabins, 67 will provide accommodations for two guests with a variety of bed configurations, including some cabins with fixed queen-sized beds and others with twin bed arrangements, several of which can be pushed together. The remaining 14 cabins are for single occupancy, featuring virtually all of the built-in furniture that the double-cabins provide.

Some of the special features we have worked with our architects to incorporate into the overall design of each cabin include:

• Glass-top writing desk with special storage slot for the National Geographic Atlas to be enjoyed in cabin;
• Ample outlets and shelves for recharging cameras, laptops, etc.
• 2 internet cable connections for laptops in each double cabin;
• Telephone for calling assistance, cabin-to-cabin, and ship-to-shore;
• Wardrobe doors on sliders (rather than those that swing open and tend to bang about in rough seas);
• Recessed and open area of wardrobe with hooks, closest to the cabin’s entry, for convenient outerwear storage;
• Open and tilted bottom shelf of wardrobe for shoe storage;
• Full-length mirror in every cabin;
• Ample under-bed storage for suitcases;
• Ample shelves and drawer storage around vanity in bathroom.
