The Making of the National Geographic Explorer

Explorer Week 23

Taking Shape

< PREVIOUS                                                                                 NEXT >

With the ship now on drydock and materials arriving by the container load from Europe and North America, work is going on in virtually every square inch of the ship.

The first of the bathroom modules have been installed, tiles and all, and the bulkheads to finish framing in those cabins will soon follow. The maze of wiring, ventilation ducting and piping is beginning to take on some semblance of order. The new CDC-approved galley equipment has arrived on site and installation is about to begin. The stabilizers will be factory tested later this week and then shipped from the manufacturer in Scotland. The new windows are coming in from Poland, cabin furnishings from Sweden, and AV equipment for the lounge from the US.

A major challenge in the weeks ahead is the coordination and tracking of all the shipments of materials and equipment converging on the National Geograhic Explorer at Las Palmas.
