The Making of the National Geographic Explorer

Explorer Week 26

Arctic Workshop

< PREVIOUS                                                                  NEXT >

The Lindblad Expeditions Field Staff who will be working in Arctic regions this summer gathered this week in Philadelphia for a 5-day workshop focused on the safety operations of Arctic expeditions.

Our meetings revolved around many topics, such as group operations ashore, responsible and conscientious ways of approaching wildlife, relationships with local communities, the review of the Association of Arctic Expedition Cruise Operators (AECO) guidelines for tourist and tour operators, the National Geographic Society’s history of Arctic expedition, and more.

A new safety operations manual was presented to the group, and our discussions focused mostly on the safety of the ship, shore, and Zodiac operations while traveling in polar bear country.

This Arctic Workshop was a great opportunity to reunite a big part of our Expedition team and talk about our inaugural season aboard National Geographic Explorer. Everyone shared their personal knowledge and experience with the group, contributing ideas and energizing each other for an exciting season of exploration. It was very inspiring to see the vast amount of talent that this company had in one single room.

- Juan Gali, Field Staff Manager
