The Making of the National Geographic Explorer

Explorer Week 32

Installing the Decks

< PREVIOUS                                                                               NEXT >

This past week a team of workers from Sweden began installing the wood decks on National Geographic Explorer. Oregon pine with a Danish oil finish is going down on the Sun Deck aft of the lounge, and on the decks of the balcony cabins. This will match the original wood that already exists on some of the decks that haven’t been touched by the conversion. The ship will have some wonderful outside areas for relaxing and viewing – the Sun Deck aft, both sides and foreward of the Wellness Center, on top of the bridge, forward of the bridge, and out on the bow.

Next week two surveyors from CDC will travel to Las Palmas to inspect the new galley, freezers, refrigerators and storerooms. This is part of the process of building a USPH compliant vessel. It started with a review of the layout and proposed equipment by CDC in Miami. Next comes this site inspection prior to the vessel being launched, then another visit after the ship is in operation with guests. Finally, there will be a full inspection of all facilities when National Geographic Explorer arrives in the U.S. this coming fall.
