The Making of the National Geographic Explorer

Explorer Week 33

A Look at Guests Cabins

< PREVIOUS                                                                            NEXT >

The public spaces throughout the National Geographic Explorer, such as the Chart Room, Mud Room, and Lounge, have been geared towards enhancing our guests’ expedition experience in every way possible. But what about private spaces, such as guest cabins? How can these parts of the ship be designed and built to enhance the expedition experience just as well? We took this question into serious consideration while designing and laying out the plans for guest cabins throughout the ship.

The guest cabins aboard National Geographic Explorer provide a relaxing and comfortable environment to repose after a busy day of hiking and kayaking. Each includes plenty of storage, hooks for hanging up parkas and lifejackets, and a glass covered slot in the desk for storing a National Geographic Atlas, which will help travelers follow the ship’s progress across the landscape.

Each cabin is also equipped with a multiple-channel video screen. This allows us to bring elements of the expedition into each individual room. Perhaps a guest is taking some time to jot notes in his or her journal in the privacy of a cabin, but still wants to watch and listen to the Undersea Specialist’s presentation in the lounge, explaining footage from the ROV. One channel on the cabin’s video screen will make this possible. Other channels on our cutting-edge expedition vessel will include the view from the high resolution Crow’s Nest camera, the electronic chart, footage from other corners of the globe, and more.
