The waters of the Antarctic may appear cold and forbidding, but in fact they teem with vibrant and colorful life. And thanks to the dauntless passion of our Undersea Specialists and the remarkable technology on board Explorer, you can sit in the warmth and comfort of the Lounge and view spectacular HD footage shot during your voyage.
Wearing nearly 200 pounds of gear and wielding an HD camera, our Underwater Specialist dives into the polar ocean to capture Cousteau-like footage of the deep. Additionally, National Geographic Explorer is equipped with a Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) that returns footage from up to 1000 feet below the surface, far below what any diver can reach.
Our peerless underwater program is an opportunity for genuine exploration — much of what we see has never before been witnessed by man. Observe fish with anti-freeze in their blood; swimming, plant-like crinoids; even wine bottles left behind by the earliest Antarctic explorers. Our Undersea Specialists regularly share their findings with marine scientists and labs worldwide. Occasionally they record mysterious marine creatures that baffle even the experts — that's how under-explored the Antarctic depths are.
These are opportunities that can fundamentally change the way you view the ocean, and add dimension and richness to your Antarctic experience.
