Can You Knit a Penguin a Sweater?

An oil spill off New Zealand stemming from a cargo ship ran aground has already caused 1,300 seabird deaths. In an extraordinary effort to stave off more bird deaths, conservationists are asking for knitters to make wool sweaters for penguins in the affected area. The notion of putting sweaters on penguins has been met with some skepticism, but it’s been proven to work — the wool keeps the oil-covered birds warm and it prevents them from eating their toxic feathers.
