A Cruise Into Norways Fjords

Last week the National Geographic Explorer ventured miles into the fjords near Nordfjord, Norway. Our on-board Video Chronicler shot some of the stunning waterfalls, but nothing really gives you an idea for just how deep these waterways are than seeing the ship moored mere feet from the shore. Headwaters of the Amazon River Crowded with Birdlife

A new video was recently sent back from staff aboard our Amazon cruise, which voyages through Peru’s Pacaya-Samiria Reserve. The footage gives you an idea of just how rich this landscape is in birdlife. The video was shot from the front of one of the motorized skiffs that we use to venture up the rarely visited tributaries deep in the reserve.

National Geographic Sea Bird

The grand prize winner for National Geographic’s annual Photos from Expeditions contest is shooting calving glaciers and wildlife in Southeast Alaska this week. He’s in good company – this week National Geographic Photographer Flip Nicklin is onboard helping guests get their dream shots of massive bears and humpback whales.

 

Extremely Rare Sighting of Orcas Mating in Alaska

Travelers aboard National Geographic Sea Bird in Alaska were witness to a rarely observed mating taking place in an orca super pod. It was a first on board for everyone, including all four Naturalists on the expedition staff. An expedition report filed from National Geographic ExplorerArctic Svalbard included this video shot in the field. Explorer always has at least one National Geographic Photographer on board, but guests on this departure have the benefit of traveling with three NG photographers and a Lindblad Photo Specialist. On this day in the Svalbard archipelago, the Captain pushed the ship into the ice and the group spotted the first polar bear of the season. in

Icy Underwater Research in Antarctica

Astrobiologist Dale Anderson exits an icy lake in Antarctica in this video – make sure you have the sound turned on for the full effect. On our Antarctic expeditions, we also explore beneath the sea using a remote operated vehicle that shoots video. It gives our guests the opportunity to explore the undersea in cold environments without swimming in the icy waters.
 

 

Sylvia Earle - Ocean Hero

National Geographic Explorer-in-Residence Oceanographer Sylvia Earle has received an vast number of accolades during her career, An Academy of Achievement Award, and 2009 TEDPrize Winner to name just a couple. She has recently launched Mission Blue, a nonprofit organization with the mission to “explore and care for the ocean.”

The winner of a National Geographic Photography contest traveled to Galápagos with his son last week. This Galapagos Expedition aboard National Geographic Endeavour was his prize, and he brought his son along to share the experience and learn more about photography.

 

Bioluminescence Is the Rule, Not the Exception in the Ocean

Dr. Edith Widder gave this 17-minute TED Talk aboard National Geographic Endeavour in Galápagos last month. She shares her findings on one of her passions – bioluminescence. Bioluminescence is the chemically produced light that she found most organisms in the sea to employ in hunting, evading predators and finding mates. She developed a new way to study these organisms, and shares some of her findings during this fascinating presentation and slideshow.
