National Geographic Sea Bird

Crow Butte and Columbia River, Washington

National Geographic Sea Bird anchored off the island of Crow Butte this morning so guests could explore hiking trails through sagebrush steppe on foot and pay a visit to wetland habitats via our fleet of kayaks.   Opportunities for enrichment onboard abound this afternoon! Guests chose to learn about geology, cultural sustainability, and local history. As we voyaged down the Columbia River, we had ample opportunities to hear from our onboard experts- our National Geographic Explorer, Ashli Aikens, along with our Lindblad Expeditions naturalists, geologist, and historian.

National Geographic Quest

Cayos Holandeses, Guna Yala

National Geographic Quest dropped anchor early in the morning in front of an Edenic island. This island, surrounded with white sand and lots of coconut trees, is part of the 365 islands that form the Guna Yala Archipelago. Our guests were eager to land and enjoy the beauty of it.   We disembarked right after breakfast. A group of Guna gave us a lovely welcome to the island. Today we enjoyed the crystal-clear waters by using kayaks and standup paddle boards. A lovely reef also invited us to snorkel and discover the underwater world. A group of our guests enjoyed a guided walk with one of our naturalists and learned about the important use of the coconut in Guna culture.   Several Guna families displayed colorful molas. They shared with us the mesmerizing art of making the molas. From a young age, the Guna girls learn how to make this lovely art.   We spent the whole day in this small paradise. We could have stayed forever in this peaceful place, but our journey had to continue. The Guna community gave us a wonderful sendoff by performing several of their traditional dances and music. It was a great way to end our day.

National Geographic Orion

Abel Tasman National Park, New Zealand

Today, National Geographic Orion anchored off the golden shores of Abel Tasman National Park, New Zealand. Guests enjoyed kayaking along the scenic coast, gliding through calm waters and spotting curious seals. Hikes led us through lush native forests, where guides shared insights into local flora and Māori history.

National Geographic Endurance

At Sea

Today we continued our journey toward South Georgia.   The wind from the last few days finally made its effects known with the sea swell significantly higher than the previous days. Some of the waves were reaching 25-feet, but with a following wind and swell and the stability of National Geographic Endurance , we were able to enjoy the conditions outside very comfortably.   We were treated to a number of great presentations from the expedition team throughout the day, including an introduction to South Georgia from Josh and Gerard to begin the morning. Before and after another delicious lunch, Mike and Kelly shared stories about the wildlife of the Southern Ocean, particularly the penguins and the seals. Gerard took to the stage again in the late afternoon to tell the epic story of Shackleton and the Endurance expedition.   It was not all lectures and presentations, with many of us enjoying the bird life outside and spending time up on the bridge. There was also the small matter of afternoon tea which, this time around, featured some beautiful ice cream!   With a tasty dinner finished, we all headed back to our cabins in excited anticipation for our arrival in South Georgia tomorrow.

National Geographic Explorer

Staten Island

The final day onboard National Geographic Explorer started underway to Puerto de Cook, our morning destination and final outing of the expedition. All were well rested after a night at anchor in the waters off Staten Island, or Isla de los Estados.   Guests enjoyed hikes to the southern beach. Along the trail there were tracks from the imported deer that roam on the island. Most enjoyable were a pair of king penguins on the landing beach. They were going through their catastrophic molt and had the shaggy feathers to prove it.   This was a fun final full day with some great informative presentations onboard by our naturalist team and visiting scientists.
