TERM CONTRACT POSITION:  Canadian Naturalist

LOCATION OF WORK
This position supports the expedition as the expert and specialist in natural history in various parts of Nunavut, Arctic Canada, specifically but not limited to: Baffin Island, Ellesmere Island, Devon Island, and Philpots Island. 

TERM DETAILS
The naturalist should expect a contract with varying hours each day, based on the itinerary (approx. 8 hours/day).  The naturalist is responsible for creating and presenting engaging presentations, recaps, and in-the-field interpretation.  It is essential that this person have excellent social skills as they will be expected to dine with guests and work in a multi-national environment, while living in close quarters.

Expedition 1:  August 8 – 19, 2018 (Approx. 5 days in Canadian Arctic)
Expedition 2:  August 19 – September 8, 2018 (Approx. 10 days in Canadian Arctic)

WAGE
$181 - $212.00 (in some cases up to $375.00) USD/Day (36.06/Hour min. CDN)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
The naturalist must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Lead engaging nature walks and offer field interpretation throughout the voyage. 
  • Participate in evening recaps to highlight guests’ daily experiences.
  • Operate Zodiacs for transportation and/or nature excursions.
  • Carry a 30-0-6 rifle ashore while hiking/walking with guests in polar bear areas.
  • Possess exemplary public speaking skills.
  • Consistently represent Lindblad Expeditions with integrity and professionalism.
  • Prepare several PowerPoint (or similar) presentations of 30-40 minutes in length, highlighting specific, relevant themes of the voyage. 
  • Write the Daily Expedition Report one or more times during the voyage, to encapsulate the guests’ daily experiences.
  • Respond to requests in a timely manner and be highly visible to guests throughout the voyage.
  • Possess excellent problem-solving skills, the ability to make sound decisions quickly, and exercise good judgment.
  • Mitigate guest complaints as best as possible and bring them to the attention of the Expedition Leader, as needed.

Company Philosophy/Programs
The naturalist must be familiar with the company philosophy and various programs offered by Lindblad Expeditions.  Should be able to address and field questions from guests regarding the various programs offered.

Conservation
Must be familiar with Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic’s conservation efforts and be able to discuss the particular conservation efforts in any itinerary where scheduled.

Zodiac Operations
Must be prepared to assist with many aspects of Zodiac operations for shore excursions.  Familiarity with Zodiacs and ability to drive a strong preference. 

Safety
Must participate in company safety training, meetings and drills.  Must be very familiar with the contents of the Field Staff Handbook.

ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS

  • Must possess specific knowledge of Arctic Canada, including knowledge of flora and fauna.
  • Previous experience with leading and interpreting nature walks in the Arctic.
  • Bachelor’s degree in natural sciences – i.e. marine biology, wildlife biology, the environment, ornithology, or related disciplines or 3 years’ minimum experience in expedition travel, shipboard research, or expedition field work.
  • Must possess recent experience with, and proficiency in, the use of 30-0-6 rifles.
  • Must have familiarity with polar bear behavior and an acute awareness of guest safety surrounding this.
  • Prior small expedition-ship experience preferred.
  • Ability to drive Zodiacs strongly preferred.
  • Must be a team-player with excellent training skills.
  • Must work well independently and be a self-starter.
  • Must be a strong communicator with individuals and groups, have an even-tempered demeanor, and remain calm under pressure.   
  • Must be able to handle multiple tasks at one time with keen attention to detail.
  • Must be fluent in English.
