Michelle Theall

Michelle Theall started her career as a photographer and travel writer over two decades ago and currently enjoys working as a senior editor and photographer for Alaska magazine covering the flora and fauna of the state. Beyond Alaska, Theall teaches photography across the globe with specialization in Arctic regions and Africa. Her award-winning work has been published in National Geographic.com, Sierra magazine, Backpacker, Outdoor Photographer, and in other titles across the globe, and she is represented by several stock agencies. She’s been featured in Oprah magazine and Health, and has appeared on Today, Fox Sports Network, and the Travel Channel.

She believes that everyone can be a good photographer and she’s dedicated to leading avid shutterbugs to experience those “pinch-me” moments, whether that’s watching a grizzly nurse her cubs, an orca breaching, or polar bears sparring on ice. Specializing in mega-fauna, Theall has an obsession with bears (black, grizzly, and polar), as well as an affinity for bald eagles, moose, and big cats. In the field, Theall encourages guests to embrace the weather, because the most dramatic shots often come in fog and before or after storms. When Theall isn’t in Alaska measuring her footprints against those of bears, she is home in Boulder, Colorado with her wife, son, and pups.
