Australian Antarctica Survey, 1911 – 1914

In 1911 Australia would dispatch their first team to head south to explore and survey Antarctica. During the three-year journey led by Dr. Douglas Mawson they collected samples of sea life and took scores of photos using glass slide negatives. The expedition photographer’s work still exists today and is referenced as a matter of scientific record. The expedition is also the legal authority under which Australia claimed the larges territory of Antarctica in 1933.
