Award-winning National Geographic photographer and visual storyteller Rich Reid has been capturing incredible environmental and adventure photos for over three decades. His engaging multimedia projects celebrate our oceans, open spaces, and wildlife, and he’s a master at techniques like time-lapse, slo-mo, and panoramic shots—in fact his time-lapse video documenting forest fire ecology earned him BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year finalist status.
Baja California is a place Rich has returned to many times over the past 30 years and its one of his favorites for filming, as he told us here.
“Baja is one of the most magical places to experience. It is equally as photogenic and beautiful from above as it is below the water. The land provides grand desertscapes with some of the most spectacular sunrises and sunsets. Cactus are perfect subjects for landscape photography along with the reptiles and birds that inhabit the islands we visit. Baja’s underwater world is just as diverse and spectacular—from large schools of fish over a coral reef and dense pods of dolphins porpoising through the sea to swimming with the playful California sea lions. Filming underwater can be challenging but rewarding, especially when snorkeling with rays or gliding past a whale shark.”
Travel with Rich and you’ll get to witness the process as he creates first-rate footage—like this mesmerizing slo-mo video of a school of fish shot at Baja’s Cabo Pulmo National Park.
Or this equally amazing encounter with a large whale shark off the coast of La Paz.
Large whale shark gliding by swimmers off the coast of La Paz in Baja California, Mexico. Whale sharks are the largest fish in the world and feed on small plankton in the productive waters of the Sea of Cortez. La Paz is a great place to have close encounters with this docile and magnificent creature. . . . . . #whaleshark #bucketlist @lindbladexp @natgeoexpeditions @natgeotravel @natgeocreative #natgeotravel #natgeoexpeditions #lindbladexpeditons #underwater #fish #gopro #nature #adventuretravel #travel #natgeo #wanderlust #adventure #ecotourism #naturelover #exploremore #natureaddict #video #videogram #baja #mexico #oceanlife #diving #ocean
