Ask any of our naturalists and there’s a very good chance they’ll single out Antarctica as their all-time favorite Lindblad destination. Even the most seasoned travelers are awe-struck by this legendary wilderness. By the indescribable grandeur, the otherworldly icescapes, and the wealth of incredible wildlife. When we finally head back, we’ll arrive at a particularly exceptional time—just as the austral summer is dawning and this frozen world is springing to life. Be one of the first to return with us this year and see what awaits you:
Early arrivals to the Peninsula get to experience something extra special: virgin snow not yet disturbed by other travelers. This is the Antarctica you dream of—the most pristine conditions, an ice-filled ocean, bright white landscapes. It will truly take your breath away as well as present some of the most superlative photo ops. The water is also crystal clear at the beginning of the Antarctic travel season so it’s an ideal time if you’re looking to capture some unique underwater shots, too.
Penguins are active throughout the austral summer. During this first part of the season, you’ll get to witness their amazing (and often amusing!) courtship rituals. Adélie, chinstrap and gentoo penguins all come ashore to mate and begin building their nests. Colonies are a flurry of activity—flipper-waving, sky pointing, boisterous squawks, pebble presenting (a flirty way to woo a mate), stone stealing and some heated showdowns over nesting space. It’s mind-blowing to realize this spirited cycle of life is playing out year after year in one of the harshest spots on the planet. And you’ll have a front-row seat to the whole spectacle.
Not too many people in the world can say they’ve been to Antarctica. Even fewer can say they’ve cross-country skied there! In the early season, our Icemaster Captains have the best chance of “parking” the ship in the ice, allowing everyone on board to descend directly onto the frozen sea. Go for a once-in-a-lifetime hike, snowshoe or cross-country ski trek and explore this vast landscape in the most thrilling way possible.
Seal Pup Sightings
While the penguins are just starting their families right around now, many seal species have already given birth. So, we might come across some leopard, crabeater or Weddell seal pups, or possibly even some southern elephant seal pups, resting on ice floes or bobbing among icebergs. Have your camera at the ready to capture all the cuteness. Thanks to our exclusive photography program, certified photo instructors will be by your side with expert tips and tricks so you don’t miss a thing.
