New Lock Expansion + BioMuseo
Extend your stay in Panama City and explore two new sites. Venture to the Agua Clara Visitor Center at the Panama Canal’s new, larger Pacific lock to see the intricacies of its workings up close. Plus, visit the Frank Gehry-designed BioMuseo (Museum of Biodiversity), the architect's only work in Latin America, and through eight galleries discover how this land bridge dividing oceans has changed over three million years.
After a mid-afternoon arrival transfer to our hotel to check-in and relax before a trip to the Panama Canal's Miraflores locks operation. Enjoy a special, private, after-hours tour of the Panama Canal Museum and dinner at the new, onsite restaurant, Atlantic & Pacific Co. Dine in the restaurant's private dining room with floor to ceiling windows and an unparalleled view of the canal, which is dramatically lit for the 24-hour operation. After dinner transfer back to the hotel for the evening. (D)
After breakfast, check out of the hotel and head for a tour of the Frank Gehry-designed BioMuseo. This is Gehry’s first and only design in Central America and features over 30,000 feet of gallery space with eight exhibits dedicated to the history of the isthmus and its myriad species (many of which we will search for once our main expedition embarks). At the Agua Clara Visitor Center experience history in the making with a firsthand look at the new, operational Agua Clara Locks. The new lock is 70 feet wider than the original locks allowing New-Panamax-sized vessels to transit. In the late afternoon, continue to Colon to embark National Geographic Quest. (B,L)
