For over 40 years, the quality and breadth of our staff has set us apart as a leader in high-caliber expeditions. Our alliance with National Geographic broadens our pool of experts exponentially. Each historian and naturalist is deeply knowledgeable about these geographies. You’re free to join any naturalist you wish for various activities. Our excellent staff-to-guest ratio ensures a variety of perspectives and personalities to enjoy. 

The team composition  

Whether it’s on the deck, on walks through coastal towns and historical sites, or in enlightening lectures on board, your team of an expedition leader, a mix of historians, naturalists, archaeologists, a National Geographic photographer, and a Lindblad-National Geographic certified photo instructor will illuminate all you see. Our wellness specialist is on call for treatments.

  • David Cothran

    Naturalist/Certified Photo Instructor
    David has worked for Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic since 1993 on six continents and in over 65 countries. David is interested in many of the natural sciences, particularly ornithology, geology and marine biology; he most enjoys contrasting the broad perspectives provided by world travel with detailed investigations of local ecosystems on land and in the sea.

  • Jacob Edgar

    Cultural Specialist
    Jacob Edgar is an Ethnomusicologist, world music tastemaker and global explorer with an insatiable curiosity for the diverse ways in which people express themselves through music. Jacob’s adventures have taken him to dozens of countries, and hundreds of the world’s greatest international music festivals, showcases and performance venues in search of exceptional musical talents. Since 1998, Jacob has been the main music researcher for the acclaimed world music compilations label Putumayo World Music, contributing songs and liner notes to over 300 Putumayo collections that combined have sold over 15 million copies. In 2006, Jacob founded the record label Cumbancha, whose artists include some of the top names in international music. In 2009, Jacob embarked on a new adventure as host of a new music and travel television program Music Voyager. The series invites viewers to discover the exciting sounds of the planet and broadcasts on PBS and other stations around the world. While pursuing his undergraduate degree at Oberlin College, where he was a double major in History and Latin American Studies, Jacob conducted field research on music and society in Central America. His love of music took him to the West Coast where Jacob was awarded the Mellon Fellowship in the Humanities and graduated from University of California, Los Angeles in 1994 with a Masters in Ethnomusicology.

  • Koen Kleijn

    Naturalist
    Koen Kleijn is an art historian, working as a journalist and a writer. He is currently editor-in-chief of Ons Amsterdam, a monthly devoted to the history of the Netherlands’ capital. He is the author (or co-author) of several books on history and culture in the Netherlands, among which Nederlandse Bouwkunst (Architecture in the Netherlands), Amsterdamse Grachtentuinen (Gardens of Amsterdam) (2005), and De Grachten van Amsterdam / The Canals of Amsterdam, (2013), describing 400 years of cultural history of the UNESCO World Heritage area.

  • Kristy Leissle

    Cultural Specialist
    Kristy was born in Brooklyn, and left New York when she was 18 to get to know the world. Her travels took her first to Europe, and then to everywhere else: she has since lived, worked, and researched on all seven continents. Kristy holds degrees from Oxford University, University of Washington, and Boston College. Having earned her PhD by studying the cocoa-chocolate trade, she is known in the industry as “Dr. Chocolate.”

  • Mark Bielski

    National Geographic Staff
    Mark F. Bielski, Ph.D. is an historian, author, and the Director at Stephen Ambrose Historical Tours. In this capacity, he has led numerous WWII tours in Normandy, Holland, Belgium, Germany and Poland. As the host of the History with Mark Bielski podcast, he discusses history from ancient to modern times with experts in their field, with special attention to the Civil War and WWII. Dr. Bielski’s first book, Sons of the White Eagle in the American Civil War: Divided Poles in a Divided Nation, combines his center of historical interest, the American Civil War with Polish history. His second book, A Mortal Blow to the Confederacy: The Fall of New Orleans, 1862, covers the fight for control of the South’s largest city. He is currently working on an historical novel about the Civil War, The Stonewall Jackson Conspiracy and a series of essays entitled, Bloodless Victories. He received his Ph.D. in History at the University of Birmingham, England as well as an M.A. and B.A. in English from Georgetown University and Tulane University respectively.
