Edinburgh Post Voyage Extension

From ancient castles to contemporary charms

Visit the ancient Edinburgh Castle and see the Stone of Destiny—an oblong block of red sandstone used for centuries in the coronation of monarchs of Scotland. Our visit is timed to coincide with the spectacular Edinburgh Military Tattoo*, a festival and celebration of music and culture set against the famous backdrop of Edinburgh Castle. You’ll also see the Scottish Crown Jewels and enjoy some time to explore on your own. From the ancient castle and historic houses of the Royal Mile to the elegant Georgian terraces and crescents of the New Town, Edinburgh embodies much of Scotland’s history and culture. In the words of the historian Murdo Macdonald, "Edinburgh is a city that makes you think about what a city should be."

*The Military Tattoo not included on all extension dates. On the other dates, there will be a Scottish cultural evening included. Please call for details.

Day 2

Visit Edinburgh Castle, and view Scotland’s Crown Jewels and the Stone of Destiny—recently returned from London after 700 years. From the castle, stroll in the footsteps of Scottish royalty along the Royal Mile to St. Giles Cathedral, where reformer John Knox preached his fiery sermons. After lunch at a local restaurant, head to the nearby port of Leith to board the Royal Yacht Britannia, which took members of the Royal Family all over the world. This afternoon you are free to explore beautiful, dramatic Edinburgh. You may choose to visit Holyrood Palace—the Queen's official residence and home of Scottish royal history, browse shops on busy Princes Street, hike the green slopes of Arthur's Seat, or stop at a pub for a taste of haggis and a local ale. Tonight, experience the pageantry of the Edinburgh Military Tattoo*, a spectacle of massed pipe and drum bands, Highland dancers, and fiddlers.
