  • Carlos Navarro

    Naturalist
    Carlos J. Navarro is a biochemist specializing in marine biology, a M. Sc. in Environmental Management and a freelance wildlife photographer/author. Carlos has spent most of the last 30 years living along the shores of the Sea of Cortez and participating in numerous scientific, conservation and environmental education projects on the vaquita, marine invertebrates, sea birds, great white sharks, baleen whales, jaguars and crocodiles. Carlos’ six years of jaguar research provided the basis of ONCA MAYA, a non-profit organization dedicated to jaguar conservation based in Cancun, of which he is a founding member and still serves as a scientific advisor. He loves being underwater, either free-diving or using SCUBA gear and have had the chance to explore the underwater realms of Alaska, Mexico, Svalbard, the trans-Atlantic ridge islands, the Caribbean and both coasts of South America from Panama to Chile and Brazil to Argentina.

  • Chelsea Leven

    Naturalist
    Time among frogs and hardwood forests established Chelsea’s love for the outdoors as a child in the snowbelt of northeast Ohio. Impelled by curiosity about the natural world, she signed up for field trips in college, earning a geology degree from Amherst College, and studying marine ecology in New Zealand. Snapshots from ensuing science positions include scuba diving research, paleoclimate studies in Chile’s Atacama Desert, and warming bags of live bats against her belly.

    Assistant Expedition Leader
    Courtney’s story is a little different than most of the Midwest kids she grew up with. Rather than settle down in her hometown of St. Charles, Illinois, she set out to make an adventurous life all her own starting in St. Augustine, Florida. It was there that she obtained a BA in journalism and film production while focusing on the marine environment.

    Wellness Specialist
    Dorien is an experienced massage therapist and yoga teacher. Originally from the Netherlands, she has been exploring the world for the last 15 years, while teaching yoga and giving bodywork treatments. She loves the magic of the undersea and has also taught scuba diving on her travels around the globe.

    Video Chronicler
    Jim was born in rural New England where he quickly developed an appreciation for the outdoors and a love of exploration.  Four years with the U.S. Navy further enhanced his appetite for travel. Always interested in the visual arts, he studied Television at Boston University and Northeast College of Communications, landing his first job in the industry working as an editor at a Boston television station. His wanderlust drew him to a job with two major cruise lines; installing and managing broadcast centers onboard a total of over a dozen ships. He has since moved on to specialize in expedition travel and wildlife productions.

  • Kayvon Malek

    Naturalist/Expedition Diver
    In 2011 Kayvon’s life changed when he took his first breath underwater. After signing up for a SCUBA course on a whim while studying at the University of California, Santa Cruz he soon shifted his major and focus in life. He graduated in 2015 after studying Environmental Studies and Biology, focusing on marine conservation. By that time, he was an AAUS certified Scientific Diver aiding in field research, a NAUI Divemaster, and had begun working at the Monterey Bay Aquarium sharing the wonder of the ocean that captivated him four years prior.

    Wellness Specialist
    Lola was born and raised in Champaign-Urbana, IL, and has been an enthusiastic traveler since childhood. She grew up dancing, biking, camping, and swimming, and has kept active ever since. Cycling is her favorite form of transportation and after graduating with a degree in history from the University of Illinois, she biked across the United States, from NYC to San Francisco, cycling over 4,500 miles through 19 states. Upon her return to the Midwest, she started experiencing lower back pain which lead her to search out different therapies to find relief. That’s when she got her first massage...and she was hooked!

    Undersea Specialist
    Paul North is the founder of the educational nonprofit Meet the Ocean and host of its online podcast. As a polar diver with Lindblad Expeditions/National Geographic, he tours the remote underwater landscapes of Antarctica and other sub-zero destinations to emphasize the importance, diversity, and unexpected color of the invertebrate kingdom.

    Born near Seattle, Washington, Rab enjoyed a highly unconventional childhood as the son of a veterinary science professor. He spent his youth paddling canoes through Canada’s hinterlands, deepening his love and understanding of the natural world.
