Baja California & The Pacific Coast Wildlife

The best places in the world to see marine mammals

The islands and much of the peninsula of Baja California exist in splendid seclusion—ideal refuge for wild creatures. Explore the idyllic islands, named a UNESCO World Heritage site, observing desert flora and fauna, and always be ready for a dash to the bow of the ship when your expedition leader announces, “Whale sighting!”

Massive numbers and variety of whales and dolphins
While the California gray whales seen on Among the Great Whales are most commonly associated with Baja California and offer the most consistent up-close encounters, it is the Sea of Cortez in which the greatest variety of whales and dolphins are observed. There are pods of thousands of common dolphins and hundreds of bottlenose dolphins. Blue whales, fin whales, as well as Bryde’s whales, humpbacks, sperm whales, plus orcas, false killer whales, pilot whales, and many more. The Sea of Cortez and the Pacific birthing lagoons are the best, most consistent place in the world to see marine mammals.

Wildlife abounds

The islands in the Sea of Cortez thrive with life. Pelicans, cormorants, frigatebirds, egrets, herons, sandpipers, plus brown-and blue-footed boobies. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the islands are famous for their wildlife. You’ll see strange lizards, rattleless rattlesnakes, and oddly beautiful plant life. The Pacific Coast is home to sea lion rookeries, epic kelp fields and extensive marine wildlife.

A thrilling undersea
There is a vibrant universe waiting to be revealed beneath the surface of The Pacific Ocean's and Baja California's unbelievably blue-green water. Sea urchins, sun stars, and myriad fishes—from velvety black king angelfish to comical porcupinefish to silvery yellow-and-black sergeant majors glistening in the sunlight. We are the only expedition company in the region that travels with an onboard undersea specialist, diving and shooting with high intensity lights and an HD video camera. You’ll view this fascinating footage on plasma screens in the comfort of the lounge.

Much more enjoyable than ordinary "cruise"!
