How you’ll spend your time and reward your curiosity
Venture into the natural and human history of the Pacific Northwest—and discover its modern charms and formidable culinary scene as well. Your ship will be your home for an unforgettable journey, and will feel like home in no time, as the community camaraderie kindles over Willamette Valley wines in the lounge, or lingering on the ship’s bow, appreciating the views. You’ll take an expedition landing craft cruise, stroll forests and historical sites, kayak, and visit out-of-the-way art galleries and museums—all in the company of an attentive and fun expedition team, who are your experienced guides in discovering the best of the region.
Explore more—make it as active as you like
Hike island forest trails in search of wildlife, kayak verdant shorelines, and bike the waterfronts of scenic cities—or take expedition landing craft cruises and enjoy guided tours of quaint museums. Options abound for being as active as you want to be in the Pacific Northwest.
Discover the region’s human history
Learn the stories and traditions of Native Americans and First Nations in the verdant Pacific Northwest. If you choose to sail the Columbia & Snake Rivers you’ll see the sites where the Corps of Discovery met with the Nez Perce, and you’ll visit camps of the Corps of Discovery, plus see native basketry and beadwork at the Maryhill Museum. Your historian will weave the tales of the Corps’ journey throughout your expedition.
If you choose to venture to British Columbia & the San Juan Islands you’ll experience the histories of First Nations people through their art and powerful dance performances, walk among charming art galleries of small towns, visit the Robert Bateman center to see the natural history artist’s impressive work, and so much more.
Taste the bounty of the region
Explore one of the most geologically and historically significant regions of the country—one that’s prominent on the culinary landscape, too. Our chef provisions the ship with the bounty of the Pacific Northwest, with fresh food harvested along the river we explore. And we source food from local providers who are committed to sustainable, organic and socially responsible practices. More about Regional Cuisine.
Outfitted for up close exploration
Our ships are outfitted with expedition landing craft, plus single and tandem kayaks for more personal, water-level explorations in places like calm bays of the San Juan Islands or glassy stretches of the Columbia River. Shoreline cruises aboard expedition landing craft are perfect for relaxed exploration with a naturalist’s narration, and the ideal platform for photography.
Enjoy the daily ritual
Each evening at cocktail hour the entire expedition community gathers in the lounge for an expedition ritual we call Recap. As you enjoy cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, various naturalists or historians give talks, and your expedition leader will outline the following day’s schedule.
Savor time aboard ship
History talks and photography instruction will be offered on some afternoons, as well. And, when the ship is underway, it’s a wonderful time to stand on the bow or sundeck with a naturalist or photo instructor, and take in the beauty of the river and lush landscapes that surround you.
