An Active Adventure

Explore the snow-capped peaks, glacial lakes, and black-sand beaches of Iceland’s southern highlands and lowlands on an extension geared toward active travelers. Venture by foot into the dramatic lava fields of Landmannalaugar, and board a Zodiac to glide past blue icebergs in the Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon. Set out on guided hikes to glaciers and geothermal hot springs to learn about the unique geology of these stunning landscapes.

Day 1


Disembark the National Geographic Explorer in Reykjavík this morning, then set out for Iceland’s southern highlands. Pass below snow-streaked ochre peaks on your way to Landmannalaugar, a mountainous, geothermal region in the Fjallabak Nature Reserve—home to some of Iceland’s best hikes. Venture into a jagged lava field and ascend volcanic slopes to take in otherworldly rock formations. Choose to soak in a nearby hot spring before continuing south to the coast.

Day 2


Visit the Icelandic Lava Show in Vík for an utterly unique encounter with the island’s dynamic geology. Feel the heat as you observe molten rock flowing within a specially constructed chamber, getting a rare close-up view of this fascinating phenomenon. Then cool off with a guided hike to the Svínafellsjökull glacier—an outlet of Vatnajökull ice field, the largest ice cap in Europe. Trace ancient striations in the sharp ice peaks and learn about glacial geology from your knowledgeable guide.


Day 3


This morning, head to the shores of the Jökulsárlón glacial lagoon, the deepest lake in Iceland. Board a Zodiac to explore this surreal realm of floating icebergsand learn from our guides about the impacts of climate change on the retreating Breiðamerkurjökull glacier. Stop for lunch in Höfn before setting out on an afternoon hike through rolling hills outside this charming port town.

Day 4


Transfer to the airport in Höfn for the short flight to Reykjavík. Enjoy a final lunch in this historic city before transfering to the airport to catch your flight home.
