The South Sandwich Islands, 2/16/2022, National Geographic Endurance

  • Aboard the National Geographic Endurance
  • Patagonia

The South Sandwich Islands are a spectacular series of volcanoes, some of which are still active. Our mission this morning was to land at Saunders Island, but the weather and seas conspired against us. Fog moved in, and the swell was high. Instead, we viewed as much as we could from the comfort of National Geographic Endurance.

Later in the day, the wind increased and whipped up spectacular spray from the waves. Conditions calmed later, giving us a spectacular sunset.
