Canadian Rockies & Banff Heli-Hiking Pre-Trip Extension

Epic Hiking in British Columbia

Experience hiking in British Columbia, Canada in the most epic way. Fly high above the treeline and beyond your wildest dreams—deep into the wilderness to places so remote they would take days to reach with a backpack. Your days are filled with exhilarating Via Ferrata excursions to Mt. Nimbus, getting up-close and personal with the Conrad Glacier or enjoying a gentle wander past an alpine lake. Fly above the trees and explore the best terrain and vistas in the area. The stunning views seen from the helicopter and while you are hiking will take your breath away.

This is hiking as you have never experienced it before and at the end of your day of hiking, your helicopter meets you and zips you back for a relaxing evening at your basecamp for adventure—the luxurious Bobbie Burns Lodge. Experience pure comfort in the middle of nowhere. Offering up stunning views, a bubbling hot tub to soak away aching muscles, fully stocked bars, plush beds, and a dedicated team of hosts, guides and culinary talent—each is waiting to be part of your trip of a lifetime. In Banff and Lake Louise, enjoy the luxury of some of the world's finest hotels, and visit the seldom seen locales to understand how these places came to be.

Day 1 - Calgary/Banff

Upon arrival into Calgary International Airport, meet your guide and begin your journey into Banff National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Canada’s first national park spanning over 1.6 million acres. Your home for tonight is the iconic Fairmont Banff Springs hotel, built in 1888 and modeled after a Scottish Baronial castle. Soak in the views from your Fairmont Gold Mountain View room and delight in the luxury of Fairmont Gold's signature private check-in, exclusive lounge access, and dedicated concierge. Opt for a spa treatment or walk the grounds before a 3-course welcome dinner this evening. (D)

Day 2 - Banff/Lake Louise

After breakfast, join your local guide for a full day tour of Banff and the Canadian Rockies. Begin with an early morning visit to the seldom-visited “Old Banff Cemetery,” the final resting place of many of the original Banff pioneers who made their way west. Next, we visit Johnson Lake. After an easy walk, we find, tucked back in the woods, the homestead of hermit Billy Carver, who lived here until the 1950’s. At Bankhead, as we continue our journey through Banff’s colorful past, we walk amongst the old building foundations of the abandoned mining town, visit the Bankhead cenotaph, commemorating those lost in the Great War, and take a short exploratory walk to the seldom seen old jailhouse hidden in the woods.

The next stop is Baker Creek Bistro via the scenic Bow Valley Parkway. Traveling the parkway, learn how the valley has changed and the challenges faced by many who dared to travel through it, first by horse and then via the railroad, all the way to the modern car. At Baker Creek Bistro, an establishment dating back to 1949 and rich with local history, enjoy a delightful lunch in a cozy log cabin complete with wood-burning fireplace. After lunch, visit Morant’s Curve, a location made famous by a member of Canada’s renowned “Group of 7” painters whose work helped shape tourism in western Canada. As the evening approaches, check into the Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, a truly classic Canadian hotel. From your Fairmont Gold Lake View Room, marvel at the rich greens of Lake Louise set against the stunning backdrop of the surrounding peaks. The walking trails by the lake are ideal for a stroll before enjoying dinner. Day 3 - Bobbie Burns Lodge

This morning, eat a hearty breakfast before venturing deep into the mountains! Set out to the helipad for your flight to the remote Bobbie Burns Lodge. Your hiking guides and gear experts will be ready to welcome you, offer an overview of the coming days and outfit you with everything you need, from hiking boots to day pack, before escorting you to the helicopter. Your guide and pilot will select trails to hike, based on their extensive knowledge of the region. After an afternoon of hiking some of the most scenic, diverse and wild trails, return to the lodge; enjoy a massage, relax in the hot tub and sauna or even go for a refreshing dip in the swimming pond. Join your fellow guests in the dining room for a delicious meal while you share stories from the day. (B,L,D)

Day 4-5 - Purcell Mountains

Join the morning stretch or enjoy a quiet coffee on the deck. After breakfast, set off with your guide into the Purcell Mountains for two full days of alpine exploring. Whether you’re up for a hike, walk, or amble, each day is tailored to all levels of fitness, experience, and age. Your guides will split the group as necessary so everyone can stay within their comfort zone. Soak in the changing scenery and watch for wildlife as you explore three or four different areas each day and look for a perfect spot to enjoy a picnic lunch with spectacular views out over the rugged Canadian Rockies. In the late afternoon, return to the lodge for tea and snacks and a little downtime before dinner, perhaps a massage is in order. Over the dinner table, swap stories of your adventures before retiring for the night. (B,L,D Daily)
