Ari Trausti Guðmundsson

Global Perspectives Guest Speaker

Ari has been active as a lecturer and nonfiction writer with some 40 published book titles in the fields of geology, volcanology, glaciology, astronomy, environmental science, and mountaineering. In addition, he has published poetry and short stories in magazines and anthologies since the 1970s, and in 2002, he received the Laxness Literary Prize for his collection of short stories. His fiction writings also contain eight collections of poems and four novels. 

Educated as a geophysicist in Norway and Iceland, Ari worked as a freelance consultant in the fields of geoscience, tourism, Arctic, and environmental issues. He has additionally written and hosted numerous radio and television programs, and documentaries for over 30 years. He has been an official guide/lecturer for Icelandic ministries, the office of the President, and several scientific institutions. In 2007 and 2010, he received prizes for communication in science and he is an international member of the Explorers Club. 

In 2012, Ari was a candidate for the office of the President of Iceland, and since November 2016 he has been a member of the Icelandic Parliament (Alþingi) for the Left-Green Party.

Ari is also noted as an avid mountaineer, climbing in many countries; and as an Arctic/Antarctic traveler and contributor to numerous scientific exhibitions, visitors centers, and museums in Iceland and abroad. Ari Trausti wrote Living Earth: Outline of the Geology of Iceland and Primordial Landscapes: Iceland Revealed.
