Carol Devine

Global Perspectives Guest Speaker

Humanitarian, social scientist, and a member of the Society of Women Geographers, Carol led a civilian ecological clean-up in collaboration with the Russian Antarctic Expedition, an Arctic Svalbard marine clean-up, and a marine debris and toxin research expedition in Scotland. Carol is co-author of The Antarctic Book of Cooking and Cleaning, a cultural history book based on a 1995-96 civilian ecological expedition she led for The VIEW Foundation with the Russian Antarctic Expedition. It weaves stories from a contemporary clean-up expedition with those of early Antarctic explorers and scientists, told through journal excerpts, facts, vignettes and images.

She speaks regularly in national and international fora on science, policy, history, and she collaborated in the Antarctic at the International Polar Year Conference, 2012. Carol also likes to make art inspired by science, and we are discussing possible onboard projects to share with guests aboard Explorer.
