Gustavo was born on the island of Santa Cruz, in the Galápagos archipelago, one in a line of several generations of Galapagueños. Since he was born and raised in Galápagos, his passion for taking care of the islands and conserving their environment has been instilled since birth.
This passion led him to work with the Charles Darwin Foundation, for which he did internships in the areas of native animal protection and monitoring, and he worked as a volunteer for a program of sustainable agriculture. He also served as a park ranger for two years with the Galápagos National Park Service in the area of ecosystem protection and conservation.
He later studied tourism administration at the University of Loja, and when an opportunity to take the Galápagos National Park naturalist course came up he took it. He finds that serving as a naturalist allows him to take care of the islands while teaching others about their unique and fragile ecosystems.
