In his decades of work as a TV video journalist in little Eau Claire, Wisconsin (about 100 miles east of Minnesota’s Twin Cities), Steve has produced more than 11,000 TV stories for the nightly news, and he has won more than 70 awards for excellence in journalism—including 4 Emmys and an Edward R. Murrow award for news writing. He is a veteran ornithologist who has travelled North and Central America observing and photographing birds, a published author, and a freelance nature and travel columnist for newspaper and magazines.
Steve has worked in Yellowstone, Glacier, and Big Bend National Parks, and he has backpacked in more than a dozen other U.S. and Canadian national parks, monuments, and forests. He is the President of western Wisconsin’s Gaylord Nelson Audubon Society, a father of two grown sons, and like his parents and parent-in-laws, a Green Bay Packer season ticket-holder.
In addition to birding, writing, photography, and sports, Steve’s interests include painting, cooking, gardening, and reading. He is also crazy about good movies.
As video chronicler, Steve has a talent for artistic composition, getting “close to the action,” and telling rich stories about the characters—human and non-human—that he meets. His goal is always to capture the living character of each expedition. Voyage DVDs are available at the end of each expedition and are an excellent way of remembering and recapturing the magic of these remarkable journeys.
