Linking community development & conservation in Northwestern Mexico
We support RED Turismo Sustentable (RED Sustainable Travel), a nonprofit that combines ecotourism and conservation activities to strengthen local communities and their economies. RED Turismo Sustentable forged a grassroots movement in Magdalena Bay focused on sea turtle conservation and coastal habitat preservation, placing conservation in the hands of community members by linking natural resource preservation to economic opportunities provided by tourism.
“There is nothing like watching a traveler, maybe someone who has never seen the ocean before, helping a fisherman with a sea turtle, taking down data and measurements before releasing it back into the wild,” says Co-Founder and Director of RED, Chris Pesenti. “That natural experience brings two worlds together and both the fisherman and tourist are changed forever.”
RED Turismo Sustentable is able to successfully carry out conservation efforts by intrinsically tying them to the livelihoods of the tour operators who live in the region. Whether it's sea turtle poachers becoming stewards for conservation in Magdalena Bay, underprivileged women training to become Urban Tour Guides, or students actively battling deforestation, RED helps people realize their potential by using sustainable tourism as a vehicle for change.
The Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic (LEX-NG) Fund aims to protect the last wild places in the ocean while facilitating conservation, research, education, and community development programs in the places we explore.
