Securing Commercial Partnerships

From ocean to plate

In any market, there is a supply side and a demand side. In order to conserve overexploited marine resources while helping artisanal fishers in Costa Rica earn a livable income, MarViva works with both buyers and sellers of fish products.

MarViva supports conservation efforts by building demand for responsibly-caught seafood among restaurants, grocery stores, hotels, and ships in the travel industry. MarViva helps these buyers, who are the last step before the seafood products reach consumers, recognize the added value of responsibly-caught fish. With increased demand and market incentives, these vendors put pressure on suppliers to provide them with such a product.

Meanwhile, MarViva also helps sellers (artisanal fisher groups) develop better business skills. MarViva assesses each receiving center and makes a detailed coaching plan based on its specific needs. With these personalized plans, MarViva provides fisher groups with training in business skills, giving sellers the ability to manage their operations more efficiently and improve their negotiation skills to build long term partnerships with buyers.

In creating these “fishing value chains,” MarViva is helping everyone in the market – artisanal fishers, intermediaries, corporate buyers, and consumers – understand the value of responsible fishing and consumption, both economically and environmentally.

With MarViva’s help, commercial partnerships between artisanal fisher groups and corporate buyers are strengthened. This mutually benefits both parties: artisanal fishers and receiving centers obtain economic incentives that reward their commitment to environmental sustainability, receiving the vulnerability of the impoverished artisanal sector, and corporate buyers receive higher quality, responsibly-caught fish products that limit the negative impact on marine ecosystems.
