Photographing & interviewing indigenous tribal elders in British Columbia
Lindblad Expeditions is proud to support In Their Hands: The Keepers of the Box of Treasures, a language and photography project that seeks to witness, honor, and record the spirit of older First Nations members of the Kwakwaka’wakw People of British Columbia. Over the past seventeen years, photographer Sharon Grainger and writer Pamela Pakker-Kozicki have developed personal connections in the region that have allowed them to document the knowledge, humor, and personalities of the Kwakwaka’wakw elders through photographs and stories recorded both in English and in their Indigenous language, Kwak’wala.
Grainger and Pakker-Kozicki are currently working on a book that will highlight the resilience of the Kwakwaka’wakw Indigenous culture through portraits of nearly 75 tribal elders, interviews, and stories told by the elders. The project will include an accompanying online language resource that contains the elders’ recorded stories in both English and Kwak’wala.
One hundred percent of the net proceeds from the sale of the book will go toward Indigenous language education programs in the Kwakwaka’wakw community.
