Underwater microphones that transmit whale communications
Hydrophones, or underwater microphones are onboard National Geographic Orion, National Geographic Explorer, National Geographic Sea Lion, and National Geographic Sea Bird to reveal rich facets of the marine world. When the opportunity is right, naturalists can deploy the hydrophones to capture haunting sounds made by whales or sea lions underwater.
You’ll learn, in lectures and from talking with our naturalists and marine biologists, about the complex social interactions and structures of these fascinating, and kindred, mammals. You’ll have an entirely new appreciation as you listen to them communicate while watching their behavior from the ship.
