Today we made landfall on the tiny bird-filled island of Ducie. This 1.5 square-mile atoll is a paradise for birds. This is due in large part to successful eradication of the Polynesian rat (Rattus exulans) from the island in the late 90’s, which were detrimental to Ducie’s bird populations. The island is home to Murphy’s petrels, as well as white terns, herald petrels, brown boobies, masked boobies, and more. Isn’t conservation wonderful!
