Drake Passage
It was a lumpy day in the Drake. Steady northwest winds of twenty to thirty knots delivered an alternating series of steep-sided swells to our starboard quarterin a slightly less than predictable rhythm. With the ever-changing pitch of the ship, moving about was like being in a dance with an unfamiliar partner. Here a guest takes a moment to stand still and observe the dance between albatross and wind, something as timeless as the ice cap that covers our destination -- Antarctica.
The black-browed albatross nests on sub-Antarctic islands and criss-crosses the southern ocean on foraging trips. Today we had several species of seabird following behind us as we made our way, southbound, across the Drake Passage. Their graceful flight, and the way in which they embrace the wind and waves with such equanimity, served as inspiration to those of us on board.
