What a perfect day to explore one of the most beautiful fjords in southeast Alaska! National Geographic Venture navigated through growlers, bergy bits, and icebergs on her way towards the Dawes Glacier in Endicott Arm. Snow-capped mountain peaks were reflected in the still waters of this picturesque fjord as we slowly worked our way towards the glacier at the end of this fjord system.
After lunch, we launched our fleet of Zodiacs in order to find ourselves in front of a more intimate look at ice calved from the face of this active tidewater glacier. Our small boats ventured around and even through the myriad forms of floating ice filling this fjord. Several times during our excursion, the Dawes Glacier treated us with the sight and sound of massive pieces of ice sloughing off the glacier face and into the waters surrounding us. To be in the presence of such power and beauty is a privilege indeed!
In a fun exercise in humility, the natural history staff traded places with the hotel stewards to wait tables and serve up dinner to all our guests aboard National Geographic Venture! Turning in their binoculars and cameras for aprons and serving trays, our staff made all attempts at efficient and friendly dinner service! This “Freaky Friday” turn of events was a lot of fun and brought home how hard our hotel staff work to prepare and serve the scrumptious meals we enjoy throughout the voyage!
