There was a buzz of excitement on the bridge this morning as we journeyed northwards through the pack ice. We spotted the ship of the Italian Research Program named the Laura Bassi, and we also had a brief sighting of some type C killer whales.
Thanks to the great efforts from our Italian naturalist, Stefano, we had a special treat planned for the afternoon involving a visit to the Italian Antarctic Research Station, Mario Zuccelli Station. With mirror-calm conditions, we were welcomed in small groups for a behind the scenes look at the station and a brief talk on the research carried out during the austral summer. After the tour we were invited to enjoy Italian treats, including espresso, cannelloni, and pizza (no pineapple included).
In between visits we also cruised the area in Zodiacs, taking in the scenery and spectacular geology terra Nova Bay had to offer.
