FLOREANA ISLAND

Shortly after breakfast, we snorkeled around Champion islet, a jewel of the Galápagos Marine Reserve.
Today, we were expecting to have one of the best snorkeling of our trip.
One scorpion stone fish was found by my colleges Naturalists.
Not easy to found are these types of fish, they camouflage very well in the rocky bottoms of the shallow waters.
Even looking at the picture above it is hard to distinguish from rocks.

Solitary is the life of the scorpion fish, hunting in silence allowing the preys to approach.
Common name for them is rockfish, which includes several hundreds of species.
Of this family, the fishes have large heads and wide gill openings.
Remain still, relying on camouflage, and move when disturbed.
Purple to brown and olive are the colors of the scorpion fish.
In all the seas is found this family, but most abundant in the Pacific Ocean.
Of all fish venoms, the most deadly is found in the stonefish.
No all the fish release their eggs; the scorpions retain them in their bodies, bearing live young.

Family composed of 60 genera and about 310 species is the rockfish.
In humans has caused death, when accidentally stepped on.
Sharp spines support the dorsal fin, which are used in defense against attackers.
Have venom glands in each spine, some species such as the tropical turkey fishes or lion fishes.
