Española Island

This morning we had the opportunity to explore a place with unique species on the southernmost island in this archipelago. Apart from that, it is the oldest geological formation in the area, and perhaps this explains why the Espanola Island fauna has a high level of endemism. Marine iguanas, mockingbirds, lava lizards, land snakes, waved albatross, and giant tortoises are found on almost all the islands, but these ones have a peculiar name: Espanola. This is because they are found only here and nowhere else in Galápagos. This is just another example of adaptive radiation in this remote isolated place.

This morning was just outstanding for its entire fauna and its geology along the cliffs. We were right in time to enjoy a natural event. This takes place when the waves roll into a fissure and, due to the pressure, the result is a huge splash of water up in the air. On our way back we even saw a small accumulation of salt as a result of this natural phenomenon.

By the afternoon we started our activities a bit earlier because of the many options we offered on board. For those water lovers a deep water snorkeling activity was offered, and what a place for this activity! Lots of fish, turtles, sting rays and the always playful Galápagos sea lions. Some of our guests decided to see the same water animals but from our glass bottom boat.

After this first activity, everyone disembarked on a white sandy beach covered by Galápagos sea lions. After being on the beach swimming and walking, others were ready to take the Zodiac – not back on board, but to do some kayaking!

This is the week that our guests have been dreaming about for so long, and this is just our first full day in the Enchanted Islands.

Without a doubt this adventure is going to stay in their memory forever and ever.
