Española Island

Today we visited the oldest island in the archipelago: Española is situated in the southern and eastern side of the Galápagos. This is the first island that the Humboldt Current reaches, when the cold season comes; and the last one that the current leaves when the warm season approaches. Therefore this is the place where you have cold waters for a longer period of time, and cold water means nutrients! Due to this, we have a lot of fish and many other species such as marine iguanas, playful sea lions, and many different species of seabirds.

We started with a walk on Punta Suarez, a long trail covered with boulders led us to the albatross airport, a beautiful area where the waved albatross lands, takes off and nests. We saw a blowhole form in the lava, and we had the company of hundreds of lava lizards as we explored the place. Nazca boobies and blue-footed boobies had their nests very close to the trail too.

We came back to get ready for our first encounter with the undersea world of the Enchanted Islands; we geared up and after lunch we had our activities of snorkeling, kayaking, and swimming from the beach in a wonderful place known as Gardner Bay. Here hundreds of sea lions entertained us during the afternoon. Some of our guests enjoyed the glass-bottom boat—they saw all the species that live in our waters without getting wet. We have options for everybody on the National Geographic Endeavour! We want you to get the best of our islands; after all, this is the experience of a life time!
