Española Island
For our last day in the Galápagos, we moved to the eastern side of the archipelago to visit Española Island. This island was a huge volcano a long time ago; today it looks like a small and flat island as it keeps on sinking slowly. We consider Española the oldest island of the group.
Activities started in front of Gardner Islet, with kayakers that woke up early to do their tour around the islet. Breakfast was ready and as soon as we finished snorkelers left the ship. Later we all went on a beautiful white coralline beach: Gardner Bay. This place is probably the best memory for many of our passengers. The beach is outstanding, but you can add hundreds of friendly sea lions sleeping around us, and the turquoise and warm water, it was a highlight for many of our visitors.
For the afternoon we moved to the western side of the island, ready to finish with the cherry on top of the cake. Punta Suarez is a place full of life, the walk leads through a blue-footed booby colony, iguanas were digging their nests next to our trail, and swallow-tailed gulls were curiously observing the day-old chicks of their neighboring Nazca Bobbies. We arrived to the blow hole and sat down for a while to remember the amazing things we have experienced during this last week. Endemic animals such as the Española mocking bird and the Española lava lizard came to see us. What a day! We came back as the sun was disappearing on the horizon.
