Isabela & Fernandina Islands
Our day couldn’t start any better! A group of common Dolphins were spotted by the keen eyes of the first officer on duty, Fernando, and immediately we redirected our course to their encounter. It was precisely here, at the northern side of Isabela Island, where today’s adventure began!
Isabela Island is by far the largest in the Archipelago, and it comprises half of the land mass of the Galápagos; four thousand square kilometers of land with a huge variety of fauna, flora and landscaping, has made this place the Island that has it all!
The Cromwell current is the main current responsible for the rich marine life of the area, as large predators are usually found here feasting on the animals that are attracted by the upwells full of plankton. This was also the reason why we found not only the large group of common dolphins during the morning, but also the reason for our mid-afternoon encounter with a Sperm whale.
Our Zodiac riding expedition along the cliffs of Punta Vicente Roca, south of Ecuador volcano, were full of interesting new wildlife; penguins and flightless cormorants were among the new sightings, while the presence of sea lions swimming alongside our Zodiacs and the occasional encounter of marine iguanas struggling in the big swells of the rough coastline, made it extra special.
If this is not enough, the snorkeling was so great that it was hard to understand the comments of guests once they returned to the Zodiac. The amount of sea turtles found in this destination and the fearlessness that these creatures showed to our guests made a huge impact on all of them.
Our afternoon on the island of Fernandina was just as great, as the impressive landscape of “La Cumbre” volcano was the perfect settings for the array of wildlife found on the island.
As we returned, the gorgeous sunset was the closure that we needed for a day like this!
