Isabela and Fernandina Islands

Our day started with a six-thirty wakeup call to see the northwestern side of Isabela Islands, which is one of the youngest islands and the biggest in the archipelago. During our navigation we came across a giant group of common dolphins and a blue whale, the biggest creature in the planet! These sightings made our day.

Later in the morning after breakfast we crossed the equator and arrived at Punta Vicente Roca, a magical place located on the northwestern part of Isabela Island. At this site we organized a Zodiac ride to explore the coastline and a deep water snorkeling to explore the undersea. The diversity of life found was very special, among other creatures we saw: Galápagos penguins, flightless cormorants, green sea turtles, ocean sun fish, and many species of coastal birds.

In the afternoon after our lunch, we continued with our navigation, this time to go to Punta Espinoza on Fernandina Island. The geology plus the marine iguanas were the highlight; the densities we found of marine iguanas were great, in some areas we counted more than one hundred.

When we were returning to the ship on Zodiacs we spotted more whales, these were Bryde’s whales and it seemed like they were feeding — what a way to finish our day!
