Española Island
Our first walk was at Punta Suarez on Española Island, and it was terrific. At the landing site we saw sea lions where it seems that they were part of the welcome comedy, and marine iguanas part of the play as well. Española, being the oldest island of this archipelago, offers a great biodiversity and a high degree of endemism. But the highlight for many of us was to find for the very first time this year, a couple of waved albatross (Diomedea irrorata) on land.
The waved albatross is one of the ocean travelers, and they come every year to nest on Española which is the only place within the archipelago where they breed, the breeding season being from April to December.
In the afternoon we focused on water activities such as deep-water snorkeling, swimming from one of the most beautiful beaches of the islands, learning how to snorkel for the very first time, and cruising in the glass bottom boat for those willing to enjoy the marine ecosystem without getting wet.
