Española Island

Today we couldn’t have enjoyed the island we visited more, as it is truly a great time of the year for sea bird activity and Española has among the largest sea bird colonies in Galapagos. Right after breakfast we went to shore at Punta Suarez, at the western end of this relatively small island. Our visit was hardly started, as we had just landed, and already the sightings were overwhelming: wildlife absolutely everywhere, from the landing jetty to the very end of the trail. Greeting us were sea lions with their pups, sunbathing marine iguanas, and the overly curious Española mockingbirds.

This particular island is the oldest amongst the Galapagos Islands, and is situated at the most southeastern point of the archipelago. The trade winds from June to December blow from the south east, meaning that Española is the first to receive cold, nutrient-rich waters from the Humboldt current during this part of the year. This is in fact the very reason for all the activity we encountered.

During the afternoon we focused on water activities such as snorkeling, swimming off one of the most beautiful beaches of the archipelago and glass bottom boating for those wanting to enjoy the wonders of the under water world without getting wet. It has been a very special day.
