Española Island

Today’s visits were so full of surprises that we could see many endemic species: the weather was great, and the water temperature was perfect for snorkeling and swimming. We surely could not have asked for more.

We started our activities doing a hike along the cliffs of Española Island; as soon as we landed we found sea lions blocking our trail. When we started to walk a little closer they just looked back to us as if we were just another species from the island.

During the walk we could experience first-hand the lack of fear in these animals. The highlights were the Galápagos hawks, the Christmas marine iguanas, the lava lizards, and the blue-footed and Nazca boobies; we were also quite impressed by the landscape. You can see plenty of birds flying above the cliffs of the island, and the green vegetation contrasts with the turquoise color of the sea. The blow hole was ejecting water very high, making us feel the moisture coming from the sea.

After our morning’s visit we went back on board for a well deserved Ecuadorian lunch. Shortly afterwards we set sail to the north eastern part of Española Island, where there was a beautiful white sandy beach waiting for us. In this place our guests were offered many options. The most experienced swimmers decided to go deep water snorkeling, as they came back quite excited, since they found many schools of fish and a big marbled stingray. Those guests who did not want to get wet did the “dry snorkeling” or glass bottom boat. They went on an outing along an Islet, and they could see the Galápagos' marine ecosystem without getting wet, through the glass of this boat.

We also had the opportunity of doing a coastal exploration aboard our kayaks; some of our guests spent the rest of the afternoon swimming and walking along the beach while taking pictures of sea lions.
