Playa Caletas Wildlife Refuge & Corcovado National Park, Puntarenas, Costa Rica
After a very smooth night off Puerto Jimenez, we repositioned around the Osa Peninsula to Playa Caletas where we had a choice of activities. The horseback riders enjoyed a trip to Rio Claro through the forest along the coast. The hikers took a vitalizing walk through the pristine rainforest at the wildlife refuge.
Chestnut mandibled toucans flew around as we discovered a couple of disguised mealy parrots in the lower canopy. The leaf cutter ants marched out of their nest disposing of the soil as they dug an expansion to their farming chambers. The tall tree trunks are covered with epiphytes and lianas. The philodendrons showed impressive sizes that called our attention. The Central American spider monkeys were watching us from the treetops as we were finishing the walk.
Before lunch the Sea Voyager moved towards the Caño Island where we found Pantropical spotted dolphins and brown boobies flew along with the ship. The seamen showed their skills on the surf as we approached the Corcovado National Park for a great afternoon. On the walks we saw mantled howler monkeys, Central American spider monkeys, great curasows, American crocodiles, and basilisks.
As we came back to the ship, we enjoyed the marine life watch with a good sighting of mother and calf humpback whales. The sunset over the Caño Island ended a day where we were in unison with nature like poetry and rhyme.
