Rio Rincón & Casa Orquídeas, Golfo Dulce
Today was our last day of our expedition in the wonderful waters of Costa Rica, and there is not a better way to end it than visiting one of the most beautiful and pristine ecosystems, Golfo Dulce. This area holds a very healthy mangrove forest as well as a tropical rainforest that was waiting to share its beauty with all of us.
Our day started with a breathtaking sunrise; the light illuminated the impressive landscape, giving us a wonderful chance for picture taken. Right after breakfast we explored this wonderful site in many different ways, and that included nature walks, Zodiac cruises and kayaking.
The fresh air blew on our faces while paddling upriver, winding between fallen trees that were used by migrant birds as a place to rest. Snowy Egrets, Willet and Whimbrels, were among the many species of birds that we got to see during our kayaking. The refreshing shade of the Red mangroves provided us a perfect place to rest during our way back to the Sea Voyager, where a delicious Mexican lunch awaited us.
By the afternoon we were given the opportunity to visit a very exclusive botanical garden known as Casa Orquideas. Its name refers to the big collection of orchids, as well as many other tropical plants that its premises have. Bromeliads, heliconias and palms were also well represented in the landscape that by the way, attracted a lot of wildlife. This included a variety of birds such as the red legged honeycreeper, fire billed aracari and a variety of bats, such as the Uroderma Sp.
Once done with our walks, the warm air temperature suggested swimming opportunities. This beach-front property also offered us with the comfort of swimming and even launching our very popular “Banana Boat”... I don’t need to tell you, but that was a lot of fun!
These days in Costa Rica have been fantastic, and with have been able to collect many memorable experiences along the way.
Tomorrow we will wake up in Panamanian waters, my country, where I am sure we will enjoy more of the rich ecosystems that this region has to offer.
Hasta Mañana…
